Why Colombia?
Spouse or permanent-partner visa: This is a Migrant (Type M) visa for foreigners married to a Colombian national, or recognized as that national's permanent partner under Colombian law. Cancilleria issues the spouse category for people who will actually live with the Colombian spouse in Colombia.
Open work permission (spouse visa): Cancilleria's Visa M Conyuge page states the visa grants an open work permit for any lawful activity in Colombia, subject to Colombian labor and profession rules.
Up to 3 years (spouse): Official spouse-visa validity is up to 3 years. Permanent-partner files are a separate M category. Duration on those files is set on the approval. Do not assume 3 years until the grant says so.
Counts toward residence: The official spouse page says this visa accumulates time toward the Resident (R) visa after a minimum of 5 years as holder. Time on the Digital Nomad visa does not.
You must live the relationship: Cancilleria can ask for extra proof of a real relationship and can call an in-person, virtual, or phone interview.
Who This Is For
Foreign spouses of Colombian citizens who will live with that spouse in Colombia.
Permanent partners (companero permanente) of a Colombian national when Colombian law already recognizes the union. That is a different M subcategory from marriage.
Couples who married abroad and can produce a Colombian civil marriage record issued in the 3 months before the visa filing (Cancilleria spouse requirement).
Partners who need work authorization in Colombia. The official spouse visa includes an open work permit.
People building toward an R resident visa through years as an M spouse holder, not through a digital-nomad stamp.
The Process
Step 1: Document Preparation
We review whether the file is marriage or permanent-partner and build the package. For spouses, Cancilleria requires an authentic Colombian civil marriage record issued within the 3 months before filing, a request letter from the Colombian spouse, a special power of attorney, and migration-movement certificates for both people.
Step 2: Application Submission
We file through Colombia's official visa platform and handle correspondence. The authority can request more evidence of the relationship or call an interview.
Step 3: Visa Approval
Spouse visas are issued for up to 3 years. Permanent-partner validity is whatever the grant says. M visas lapse if you stay outside Colombia more than 180 continuous calendar days in any 365-day period from issuance (Cancilleria M-visa rule).
Step 4: Cédula de Extranjería
Register the visa and apply for the foreigner ID. Cancilleria FAQ: 15 calendar days from entry into Colombia, or from the visa issue date if you already received it inside the country. We coordinate the Migracion Colombia appointment.
Requirements
From Cancilleria's Visa M Conyuge page, plus the usual identity file:
Valid passport with blank pages.
Colombian civil marriage record (spouse files): authentic copy issued within the 3 months before the visa application.
Letter from the Colombian spouse requesting the visa, stating effective cohabitation, with phone, physical address, email, and a copy of their cedula de ciudadania.
Special power of attorney with notarial or Colombian-consul acknowledgment of signature, so the foreign spouse can file.
Migration-movement certificates for the foreigner and the Colombian spouse, issued by Migracion Colombia.
Colombian spouse's ID (cedula de ciudadania).
Health coverage valid in Colombia for the stay.
Apostilled criminal record from the country of residence, when the platform asks for it.
Permanent-partner files: proof the union is recognized under Colombian law (typically a notarial declaracion de union marital de hecho). Extra relationship evidence is common. Do not treat a boyfriend/girlfriend letter as enough.

Important Notes
Two categories. Marriage (conyuge) and permanent partner (companero permanente) are different M visas. Most official detail we cite is the spouse page. Partner files need a recognized Colombian union, not a casual relationship.
Live together. The official spouse visa is for foreigners who will actually live with the Colombian spouse in Colombia.
180-day absence rule. Type M visas lapse if you are outside Colombia more than 180 continuous calendar days in each 365-day period from issuance.

Open work permit is stated on the official spouse page. Profession licensing rules still apply.
R visa clock is 5 years as M spouse holder on the official page, not 3. Do not quote 3-5 years.
Tax residence: Spending more than 183 days in a year can make you a Colombian tax resident. Confirm with a tax advisor.
This is not the Digital Nomad visa. DNV time does not count toward the R visa the way this M spouse time does.
